Eye Exams Back

The Canadian Association of Optometrists stresses the need for periodic optometric exams, as symptoms of needing a checkup may not be immediately evident. Depending on the patient's age, there is a recommended minimum of when an examination is needed.

Of all the things you can do for your eyes, nothing is more important than an eye exam. From infants starting at 6 months, to seniors 65 and older, eye exams are a necessity. Not only do eye exams help you maintain your vision, but also an examination can detect potential eye problems before becoming serious.

Adult eye exams are detailed, and so the optometrist will decide which tests to conduct based on professional judgment any evident symptoms or concerns you have. As a result, eye exams may include, but is not limited to the following:

  • A discussion of your past and present vision and medical problems, as well as a detailed family history
  • A neurological assessment including pupil retraction and an assessment of your peripheral vision
  • Testing for glaucoma including testing eye pressure, and examining the optic nerve and retina
  • An assessment of the eye itself, both inside and outside
  • A measurement of eye sharpness, both individually and together
